It was a twilight meeting at Kapunda today with the weather a lot better than last year where all the drivers got a little wet.  We had Don Wenham calling the pony races and Julie Gilbert and Natalie van Amstel taking the photos so I am looking forward to displaying them in the 2010/2011 Year Book.

The SAHRPA are very privileged to be invited each year to the Kapunda meetings as all the drivers are very well catered for and nobody goes home empty handed.  Marcus Hearl donated the winning trophies to both the Shetland and Open Cup winners which was a lovely horse statue.  Marla Collins who is only 9 years old and lives in Mildura visited the Kapunda Cup meeting last year and instantly fell in love with the pony racing so her dad borrowed Aussie for the off-season for her to learn how to care and drive a pony, today Marla was back again with a huge smile on her face as she donated the trophies to the second and third placegetters.   Our other sponsors for the day were Kapunda Harness Racing Club where all drivers received a free drink and ice-cream, Laucke Mills where all ponies received a Feed Voucher and McDonalds where all drivers and their siblings received a voucher.

There were 4 scratchings in the Shetland Cup today with Swamp Fire being unavailable as he had other obligations giving pony rides at the Whitehorse Inn!   As they stepped away in the Shetland Cup Two Tone Miss was out in front from Pee Wee 50, Eddy’s A Fake, Ben Ten and a long gap back to Wandarra Tess and Its All About Me.

Ben Ten rounded the field up swiftly and raced to the lead to win easily giving Jason Kittel back to back Kapunda wins.   The backmarker Wandarra Tess (Jacinta Gilbert) was flashing home down the outside and grabbed Eddy’s A Fake (Jodie Billinger) right on the line for second placing with a gap back to Two Tone Miss who did a lot of galloping and Pee Wee 50 close by in 5th position.

The final placings were Ben Ten (Jason Kittel) first, Wandarra Tess (Jacinta Gilbert) second and Eddy’s A Fake (Jodie Billinger) third.

At the presentation after the race when Jason Kittel was being interviewed by Marcus Hearl, Jason’s  comment was “it is the same trophy as last year” and then went on to say he was racing Aussie in the next race and hoped she would win although she might be tired after winning last night.  Very good at public speaking Jason!

In the Kapunda Open Cup the front marker was Born To Be Wild (Cameron Jacques) and held the lead for a little while before being overtaken by both Westbury Bogart (Shannon Platts) and Cowboy Road (Jodie Billinger) who had a battle for most of the race after starting off the same mark.

The ponies were all racing pretty much together on the home corner with Chilli Knights (Chantelle Rendall) making a big run and sprinting hard.  Lapanacaton after getting cleaned up at the start by Aadelaidee Lady when she did a u-turn did a great job to flash home and take out second placing with the early leader Westbury Bogart finishing third.

The final placings were Chilli Knights (Chantelle Rendall) first making it two wins in two days, Lapanacaton (Nicholas Brown) second and Westbury Bogart (Shannon Platts) third.

When being interviewed by Marcus Hearl Chantelle Rendall thanked Courtnee Wise for loaning her Chilli for the season.
