MOUNT GAMBIER

14 JANUARY 2011

The Young Drivers of  the Future Handicap sponsored by P&L Livestock and Real Estate was contested by nine eager ponies at the Greenwald Paceway on Friday night. In near perfect conditions following the near torrential rain of the night before the ponies set off from their marks as the whistle blew.
Run Jemma Run driven steadily by Josh Micallef had the early lead but was overcome quickly by Snoopy and Kylie Shepherd. This combination jumped out of the ground this week with a much improved run to hold off a fast approaching Slim Dusty and Stacey Barker.
Snoopy hit the line one sulky’s length ahead of Slim Dusty followed by White Lightning whose driver Tom Rundle had a hard time holding his pony in a steady gait so was relegated to 6th position. Third placing went to Grady Hutchesson driving Pamela who also had trouble at times holding his pony in her stride and received a warning for excessive galloping from the steward. Flashing home for fourth place was backmarker Pumpkin (Emma Greenfield) ahead of Willow (Abbey Gull), Run Jemma Run (Josh Micallef), Frankie Under Fire (Matthew Shepherd) and Marmalade (Jackie Barker) who is having trouble finding form.
The winning pony of the night, Snoopy, trained and driven by Kylie Shepherd received a pony rug and trophy for her win.
