DOUBLE QUINELLA FOR GREENFIELD SISTERS

Pony racing returned to the Greenwald Paceway last Saturday night with 5 competitors vying for the honours in the Tank Man Handicap & the Joe’s Live Lobster Handicap.

Race 1 was a fiercely contested race with Gold Cup winner Willow driven by Abbey Gull in the lead for most of the way. He trotted along steadily but was overcome by the fast approaching backmarkers in the straight.

Minty (Hayley Greenfield) looked to be the winner after passing Willow and heading strongly to the line. Stablemate Pumpkin with Emma Greenfield stormed up alongside causing Minty to break stride. Pumpkin then stole the lead & claimed victory by 2 lengths.

Marmalade (Jackie Barker) strode into 3rd place from Slim Dusty (Stacey Barker) & Willow (Abbey Gull).

In Race 2 the ponies were re-handicapped to produce another interesting contest.

The frontmarkers, Slim Dusty & Willow, tried desperately to hold onto their leads but were unable to maintain the gap as the backmarkers flew by in the home straight.

Hayley Greenfield guided Minty to the front & she trotted faultlessly over the line for the win.

Second place was Pumpkin by a very narrow margin to an unlucky Marmalade, from Willow & Slim Dusty.

Our next meeting is the Glencoe Cup on the 6th of March with the ponies competing for a pony rug & trophies.

With only 4 more meetings to the end of the season the ponies & drivers are eagerly trying to score points towards Pony of the Year. Only 5 points separate the top 3 ponies with the 2008-09 Pony of the Year, Pumpkin, currently running in second position.
