Each year the Gawler Cup meeting makes the young drivers feel special and this year was no different.  Due to it being a very special night for the Club with lots of trophy races we were only able to run two pony races but they were full fields with every driver receiving one drive for the night.  The SAHRPA would also like to thank the families who raced their ponies with a different driver on their ponies, this was appreciated.

The first of the pony races was raced after the first local race.  Three ponies started off the front mark, Westbury Bogart, Magpie Mary and Mr Murphy.  Westbury Bogart stepped away the quickest and said catch me if you can, whilst Magpie Mary was not on her best behaviour and continued to gallop whilst Kaycee Carey was trying to restrain her.

Turning for home Westbury Bogart had a good lead ahead of a group of ponies including Way To Go, Magpie Mary, Mr Murphy, Wandarra Tess, Summer Surprise and Aadelaidee Lady.

At the 50 metre mark Kathryn Lehmann said 'go' on Way To Go and was able to take the lead in the last stride to beat Westbury Bogart a step before the line.  There was a 10 metre gap back to another close finish with Magpie Mary taking out third from Wandarra Tess driven by Samantha Pascoe in fourth placing.

Coming off the front mark PJ led the field around the top corner but the one to watch was Cameron Jacques on Reggie Ledgie weaving his way through the field, around Swamp Fire then back to the rails inside Eddy's A Fake he was taking all the short cuts.  My Little Pony was moving up three wide into the race nicely and running 4th and looking a main danger when he pulled up to a stop letting fly both barrels at Jennifer Lehmann, I am sure Jen was very disappointed with her pony tonight.  Whataday and Cowboy Road had to swing wide to avoid contact, once again good horsemanship by all young drivers.

Half way down the straight and PJ was out in front with Reggie Ledgie slowly making ground and Eddy's A Fake who was driven by Lauren Basto having her first drive in a race.

In the final stages Reggie Ledgie cruised away to win by 10 metres ahead of the fast finishing Little Kizz and Christie Gilbert down the outside.   Cowboy Road and Jodie Billinger held of for third with a photo finish for fourth between Crackerjack and Eddy's A Fake.
