The drizzly conditions at Greenwald paceway on Sunday night did not stop any pony trot drivers as they set to compete in the two scheduled races sponsored By Jamie and Rebecca Opperman Racing Stables and Diverse Transport Fabrications.
With a great start, front marker Buddy Boom Boom (Evie Sealey) trotted remarkably taking the lead early until the home straight. However, the rest of the ponies quickly made ground on them, but only Jackim (Jacob Opperman) was able to pick up speed to overtake them. Jacob Opperman drove Jackim over the finish line ahead of Buddy Boom Boom (Evie Sealey). Zena (Kimberley Opperman) received third placing, ahead of Super Mario (Keeley Formosa), Jerry (Nicola Bowditch), Marmalade (Mikayla Bygate), Blaze (Amber Formosa) and last over the line were Oliver Twist and Bryce Bygate.
All nine ponies and drivers took to the track for the prestigious Young Drivers of the Future Cup, sponsored by Diverse Transport Fabrications. Jackim (Jacob Opperman) was re-handicapped to suit their performance which helped other backmarker Blaze (Amber Formosa) to get off to a good start. Buddy Boom Boom (Evie Sealey) took out first place, with a very controlled, smooth trot. Jerry (Nicola Bowditch) made good ground with a confident drive, taking second place, Super Mario (Keeley Formosa) finished well with third place. Marmalade (Mikayla Bygate) was on their back; Blaze (Amber Formosa) followed Jackim (Jacob Opperman) over the line who again trotted well. Zena battled to the finish line for sixth placing. Slim Dusty crossed the line with Oliver Twist not far behind (Bryce Bygate).
Evie Sealey wore her teal pants over the line for the win. All reinswomen, including pony drivers will wear teal pants to promote and raise funds and awareness for Ovarian Cancer research for the Women’s Cancer Foundation. They are also supported by the Clerks of the Course who wear teal silk shirts.
